Killer Whales – Tweed Heads – Point Danger – Queensland – Australia

27 Aug 2009

A rare sight indeed as we headed out through the Tweed River on Tuesday the 25th August 2009.

To our amazement we came across a large pod of Killer Whales (Orca’s) around 1.5 kilometers from shore as we headed out on our whale watching cruise at 9am.  We first spotted a small pod in the distance and straight away new that this just wasn’t any day it was going to be special as we had come across a pod of Killer Whales – we thought we had a cow, calf and bull, then we spotted more Killer Whales, they appeared to be everywhere, all around, spread out like a large pod of dolphins, they were darting here and there.

Then we spotted three large humpbacks chasing the Killers and then the Killers chasing the Humpbacks – never ever before have we ever seen anything like this other than on documentaries and Tony and I were blown away by this experience.  We spent 2 hours with the Killer Whales and watched them swim near the boat several times.  We had one female swimming at the rear of the boat in our wake

Then we went out again on Wednesday and had the most amazing experience with three very large humpbacks that just wanted to spend heaps of time with us – in fact we had to leave as we had already been with them for 2 hours and were now running 1 and a 1/2 hours overtime – but we could have stayed out there all day and night, these whales were magnificant.   These three humpbacks came to the boat and spy hopped all at once rolled over, played, splashed, blew bubbles at us – oh my god !! this was by far the best day of my life !!!!!  I climbed onto the back marlin board and reached out to touch them, they tried so hard to get as close as they could, but their bulky bodies just wouldn’t let them get any closer to me, they tried and tried and my arms just weren’t long enough.

In all my 49 years of life I would have to say that this is the love of my life and I am so so happy out on the ocean with these magnificant mammals – they are so interactive with you, this particular whale just fell in love with us and he played and played around the boat for such a long time – in fact we had to leave them, they didn’t want to leave us!

This whale actually went over to another pod not very far away and brought back another two whales, which then made 5 whales around the boat.

Every single day is magic – hope to have you out on board with us real soon, the babies are on their way – yippee !!

This has been Carol the ‘Whale Women’ until another day.
