Humpback Whales off Coolangatta Queensland Australia
Does it get much better than this? I very much doubt it – still pinching myself here!!! Look at this!

These magic photo’s were taken Tuesday 24 Aug 2010 and of course where am I – right down there in front reaching out to my whales !!! The folk on board were stunned, amazed, in shock, they didn’t realise that whales did this and just how gentle they were – in other words they couldn’t believe what they were seeing – FANTASTIC STUFF. We get this sort of behaviour every August – by far the best month for the whales coming to the boat – we have encourtered several whales doing this sort of thing this month already – gotta love it !!!
Back to my report – sorry get a bit excited !!
Monday 23 Aug – 3 pods today, bit cold, windy and wet, found whales but not overly active, one whale breached right in front of the boat and today we had hundreds of dolphins – great stuff
Tuesday 24 Aug – 14 pods of whales – FANTASTIC DAY with calm conditions and loads of whales – whales everywhere, all pods going south accept for a cow and calf racing north, the calf was speeding along as mum was underneath him, the calf would have been about 3 days old – keep up or get seperated from mum !! All whales were in a bit closer today – it was on this trip that the whale above in the photo’s mugged the boat for 30 minutes – MAGIC !!
Wednesday 25 Aug – 6 pods some going north and some going south today. Heaps of whales probably in excess of 12 and heaps of dolphins today – Great Day
Thursday 26 Aug – today around 10 pods of whales all going south and very relaxed, at one point we had whales all around the boat 12 o’clock, 11 o’clock, 3 o’clock, 1 o’clock, 7 o’clock, there’s another pod at 10 o’clock – wonderful day, everyone very happy indeed. We had dolphins again today swimming under the bow of the boat – kids were very excited along with some very happy adults – everyone loves the dolphins
It’s a long weekend here in Queensland so I am looking forward to loads of sunshine and heaps of beautiful whales – see you out there real soon
This has been Carol the “Whale Women” until next time – happy whale spotting
