2008 August | Aquatic Blue Charters

A pleasant morning out on the Gold Coast waterways, a little overcast and bit cool today.  We enjoyed two very relaxed humpback whales this morning, they rolled over, pectoral fin slapped, spy hopped from a distance, and just happily swam along slowly heading south.

We also met up with a single humpback, breaching and tail lobbing, this whale had a black underbelly, we’ve only seen a few of these, they are quiet unique, he was on his way north!

Then a few more out further, in a hurry heading south.  We left these whales and headed back in towards Coolangatta and didn’t come across another whale, lucky though we did have beautiful whales for the first half of the morning – everyone was very happy and excited.

So far this season, 58 trips and 100% success in seeing whales !!  It can’t get any better – oh yes it can – the calves are on their way !!

This has been Carol – The Whale Women until tomorrow!!

Another exciting day off the Gold Coast for whale watching, clear skies, a little windy but great conditions for some fantastic whale watching.  We spotted a pod of two whales off Coolangatta about 4 miles, they were having (pardon the pun) “a whale of a time’ breaching and playing, we arrived to see two very happy and relaxed whales totally enjoying themselves and very happy to have us watching them.  We spent around 1 hr enjoying their antics and then one of them breached – well, that sent out the message, cause we then saw two other humpbacks racing at full speed our way – must have been a good message – the word was out – we’re having fun over here – they all joined together and played around for a short time and off they went – they all headed north.  We left these four whales and started making our way back home.  On the way we came across another two humpbacks just off Coolangatta, just happy swimming along, what a great day out.

A calm day on the Gold Coast, seas were calm, no wind and a warm spring day was on the way.  Today our beautiful whales were out wide, further than normal, we didn’t care, the boat ride was awesome!  As I sat on my perch at the front of the boat, up high to see the view, we headed off, “there she blows” calls Tony, who was up higher than I, on the roof of the boat, as he stands up tall, he could see for miles, and true enough, there they were, three pods of magificant humbpack whales lazing around in the calm waters.  As we approached, three pods, two heading north and one heading south, they joined for a short period and kept on their way.  We followed two heading south, very quiet in the water.  We left these two and headed back north, came across a fantastic pod of two heading south !!  They were very relaxed and came to the boat a few times, there they are !!! wow how exciting !!

All in all a beautiful day out and plenty of whales about, on the way back in another pod, so today probably around 12 whales – no calves today. We had pectoral fin slapping, rolling over, tail flicks and total enjoyment !!

This has been Carol – The Whale Women – until tomorrow !!

Today we headed out on our normal 9am trip, earlier this morning loads of humpback whales playing off Coolangatta in close, but they had headed way past Cook Island by 9am.  So we headed out to sea and came across to very relaxed humpbacks, rolling over, pectoral fin slapping and hardly moving at all, just happy showing off around the boat.  We left these playful two and headed back in towards Coolangatta and there we found one very happy humpback breaching and rolling over, pectoral fin slapping, both fins in the air What a Picture !! alongside was his/her mate just swiming happily while the other showed off.

A great day out

A lovely day out to sea, too windy to go whale watching yesterday,  but today with magnificant conditions we headed out for our adventure.  We came across a pod of humpback whales heading south about 3 miles off shore, then another pod, then another etc etc then a pod going north still and another – all in all a great day out we had heaps and heaps of whales – probably around 16 whales today – FANTASTIC!!  I’ve posted another pic from one of our trips this week.

Money just cant buy this !!!

We headed out the Tweed River early for our regular whale watching cruise off the Gold Coast/Tweed Coast, the sea was calm, a little overcast and cool.  Within 10 minutes we had word of whales about 3 miles off shore, so off we headed and came across a pod of two humpback whales making their way south.  Before we even got within koowee of the pod one of the whales turned sharply and headed straight for us, as if he had found a long lost friend and was coming to greet me !!  The other whale kept on his merry way, this fellow was more interested in us than his companion – lucky us!!

This AWESOME – FANTASTIC – FRIENDLY – LOVEABLE WHALE spent the next hour playing with us, turning upside down, he spy hopped and looked straight at me with his beautiful big eye wide open – oh my god that was truly amazing !! he continued to move around and under the boat from side to side giving us the most amazing show, he blew bubbles at us, we all got wet, he did this several times as if playing a game,  placing his body just under the water and he blew out his air and the water sprayed us, it was like a bubbling volcano, he rolled and just kept on coming to the boat to look at us, he was enjoying every single moment of our excitement and screams of joy as we reached out to him.

To have such a beautiful up close and personal experience with this whale has blown me away and I have been whale watching for many many years – I cannot even begin to explain how wonderful it is to have these magnificant whales in our waters and to have them so interactive with us – it’s like they wanted to be with us and enjoy our company – then we thought he had left and moved away to be with other whales that were heading our way, as if they had heard about the fun this whale was having, he came back and bought his friends with him and he did it all over again – how very very lucky we were on Monday – I will post a couple of shots that we took on the day

Yesterday we had sleepy whales in the morning and very active and friendly whales in the afternoon, two whales came to the boat and swam all around having a good look at us.

Sunday morning saw windy conditions and one whale in the river mouth swiming south with a pod of bottlenose dolphins. This happy humpback was surfing the waves with the dolphins and really enjoying himself. We left this lone whale and headed out to sea, we travelled for over an hour before we came across any more whales – but what whales – it was well worth the wait for these beauties!! Two pods off Coolangatta travelling south, the two pods joined up and put on a real show, we had breaching, pectoral fin slapping and then they turned toward us and came straight over, they rolled, spy hopped, all four whales where very active very close to the boat, the crowd was excited with one young lady crying with joy, they swam under the boat, around the boat, kept on coming back for more looks – wow !!! Now that was truly magic today – how lucky are we? VERY VERY LUCKY!!!

This has been Carol the Whale Women until tomorrow!!

The day was beautiful, plenty of Gold Coast Sunshine again !! calm seas, no wind and a lot warmer today! We headed out and found one pod of two humpback whales breaching off Coolangatta and moving very very slowly south – not in any hurry at all!!
A very curious and relaxed pair of whales, settled very well with us and we spent quality time enjoying each others company.  They rolled over, swam around the boat looking at us from under the boat and just cruised along not at all concerned about us.  We left this pair and joined another pair also travelling south, then we came across a pair going north and moving fast, catching up to another pod also heading north.

A little warmer this morning, we came across one pod of 2 humpback whales, we believe they were sleeping, sitting very very quiet on the surface and not moving very much at all.  We left this pod and headed out to sea to another very sleeping pair then we could see a breaching whale back in close to shore so off we went and came across two very active pods travelling north still.  The two pods joined together just off Coolangatta and proceeded to travel quickly north, one in particular was breaching happily.

All in all a great day out with plenty of sunshine on the Gold Coast with around 8 whales today.

Cheers until tomorrow this has been Carol – the Whale Women !!

Well, it’s on again, the best show in town is right here off the Tweed Coast and Coolangatta Gold Coast – we saw – we gasped – we screamed with joy – we clapped – we cheered for we were seeing something truly magic – two huge humpback whales ever so peacefully swimming south about 1.5 miles off Point Danger, they saw our boat and decided to join us – well – what a picture – they came straight over, swam under the boat, rolled over so they could see us, rolled and rolled again and again as if showing off their beautiful bodies, dived to show off their tales, swiming along some more and back they came again, this time showing us their entire tale half their bodies out of the water – look at me !!! again coming to the boat, rolling and playing – we were literally gob smacked !!!  Then off in the distance we could see two more pods playing and breaching so we decided to head out to the action as our two happy whales had seen what they wanted and carried on.

We arrive at our destination and there were 4 whales heading south, in a playful mood indeed –  and low and behold – again we had the whales coming to the boat – we couldn’t believe our luck – this time they were swiming upside down next to the boat, around and around they went – having a real good look at us – do we know you?   They breached and played around for some time.

Today we would have seen over 20 whales all going south, sea conditions were fabulous with a light cloud cover and quite chilly – everyone had a ball – what a day!!

I have a pic of our calf born off the Tweed Coast last week – how beautiful is this, we should call this little calf “TWEED”
