2009 June | Aquatic Blue Charters

Humpback swims under the boatSince I last wrote we have had bad weather, big seas and plenty of rain, this has sent the whales way out to sea, they don’t like the bad weather – neither do I !!!  I first trip after the 20th was the 24th, we had a reasonable swell and plenty of whales on their own again.  Whales breaching out wide.

Thursday 25th fantastic day out around 6 pods today, we had double breaching and they came reasonably close to the boat – great day out.

Friday 26th o overcast conditions plenty of whales, more lone whales and he/she came to the boat for a bit of a look, swam under and around us – very exciting !!   Plenty of whales out and about but not near us, but a great day out.

Saturday 27th calm day a bit of cloud cover we found another lone whale today, so many whales on their own this year, not normal at all.

Sunday 28th – whales all asleep this morning, more lone whales just swiming along.  We are feeling that this past week we have been seeing a lot of juveniles who haven’t quite made the grade yet and are still “loners” mind you they are solatury mammals, but not this many!!!!

This afternoon, we found another lone whale happily breaching his little body all afternoon, he was obviously trying to attract some company – without success – he was a true delight to see, as he breached for the entire trip – how lucky were we!!!

The season has been slower than last year, with plenty of lone whales and not as many – BUT – we have word that they are ON THEIR WAY – the word is there’s heaps on their way up and so is MIGALOO – WE EXPECT TO SEE HIM THIS WEEK – can’t wait – if we see him this week we will be so excited – he is a STAR !!!

This has been a very excited Whale Women – until next time !!!

Donna and Craig’s Day out with Carol and Tony

Sunday 14th June 09 the whales come close to the boat to have a look !! awesome !!

The pods have been small, they seem to be travelling in one’s and two’s.  Nearly every day we have had breaching whales and some days the whales have come to the boat to have a good look at us and some days they just keep swimming along – as whales do.

We’ve been out every day possible and have seen whales on every single trip – it is so fantastic to see the humpbacks back in our waters again, they are a true delight.  By the end of this coming week, we should be seeing several pods on each cruise, last week we were seeing two or three pods during the cruises, this will only increase to a spectacular showing right through until October now.

Seeing plenty of last year’s calves, these are the one’s mostly breaching.  Plenty of tail lobing and rolling over going on – great to see.  We have also been seeing plenty of Common and Bottlenose Dolphins, they have been a real bonus and everyone loves the Dolphins.

Happy Whale Watching and see you out with us one deal real soon

Carol ‘The Whale Women” until next time.

On Thursday 11th June the humpback whales had one thing on their mind and that was ‘let’s travel today’ no play, just travel.  We had a great day out off Coolangatta, the seas were a little on the choppy side, but certainly not rough. We found 2 pods, one with  around 5 humpbacks with a one year old calf in amongst the adults, travelling around 7knots and not at all active, but still surfacing every 5 minutes or so.  We left these humpbacks and turned around to head south again and came across another pod of a cow and her last year’s calf, doing the same thing as the other pod, just travelling.

All in all, a great day out, we had plenty of whales to look at and everyone enjoyed the day.

Today, the whales were more active, a little way out to sea today, around 5 miles, still moving along reasonably quickly though.  Our first humpback was very happy showing off his tail and surfacing at regular intervals, this one was on his/her own.  A little further north off Burleigh Heads we spotted a whale breaching and decided to go and take a look.  Another lone whale very happy indeed.  He/she quite happy that we were in the area and constantly came in behind the boat, diving underneath us a couple of times.  Everyone onboard was very excited.  We travelled with this humpback for about 40 minutes as he/she showed us plenty of tale action – towards the end we were blessed with a beautiful big breach just in front of the boat – how lucky are we ?

This time of year there’s a good steady flow of Humpback whales coming past the Gold Coast, not too far out to sea and seems to be a lot of cow and calves making their way north for the first time.  A lot of lone whales too.  Within a week, we should start seeing multiple pods all over the coast.

Have a great day and see you out whale watching off Coolangatta real soon.

Cheers for now

Carol ‘The Whale Women”

Hi Carol, Tony and Anastasia!
We had a great time on our tour yesterday morning. We all absolutely loved it and WOW did the whales turn on a great show for us… three breaches, three pods and all of them coming up in unison for a breath. So beautiful.
It seems we lucked out to have seen them too as I did not see another pod in any direction after we saw our three.

Attached is a photo of the Unison Breath. It looks like I got it!

Thanks again and I am sure we will be back again later in the season.

Cheers and thanks again.  Barbara Goodrich

Barabara’s shot of the day !!

Barabara's shot of the day !!

This shot was sent in by Barbara, who came whale watching with her American family on Saturday 6th June 09, what a fabulous day out we had.  Thanks Barbara.
We went out again in the afternoon, beautiful conditions again.  We found another 2 pods off Cooli and they sowed off yet again with 3-4 breaches.
Sundays trip (this morning) we found one whale off Cooli but what a whale – he rolled over, he tail lobbed continuosly the crowd went wild with cheering and clapping – we all were blown away by this whales willingness to entertain us.
CAROL THE WHALE WOMEN

The season has started with a BANG !!! On Monday (0ur first trip for the 2009) we found a pod of 2 whales off Kingscliff – all very happy onboard.

Didn’t go to sea on Tuesday, but today we were out and came across 6 pods of humpback whales much closer today, straight off Coolangatta.  What a sight ! All humpbacks travelling within viewing distance of each other and happily making their way – slowly – towards the Sunny Whitsundays.

The weather could have been a bit better, but the rain held off while watching the pods from in front to the side and behind us – a fantastic start to the season.

This whale watching season is gearing up to be the best ever with plenty of humpback whales coming through early in the season.
