2009 August | Aquatic Blue Charters

Friday 28th August – so calm out to sea – the humpbacks were everywhere, but ever so quiet in the water – a sleepy day for our fond friends.  95% of the humpbacks are heading south now and in no hurry whatsoever, just happy going along.  We had two trips today and more whales in the afternoon than the morning.  We had whales close to the boat this afternoon and heaps of humpback whales chasing each other all over the ocean – what a site !!  As we were coming in over the Tweed Bar, Tony came to a holt – what is going on !!!! oh my god it’s two whales lounging around in the bar !!!!  Sipping on Tequila Sunrises no doubt !!!  There they were in their glory, rolling over and not at all concerned that we had stopped all of a sudden so as not to run over them and of course get our last look at these magnificant mammals,.  Then off out in the waves another whale SURFING !!! you wouldn’t read about it !!!!  Plus the dolphins were swiming with them !  what a treat !!

WHAT A DAY !!  WHAT A WEEK !!!  HOW GOOD IS THIS !!  OUR AMAZING TRIPS MADE THE NATIONAL NINE NEWS ON TUESDAY NIGHT WITH THE KILLER WHALES AND CHANNEL 7 NEWS WITH THE HUMPBACKS ON WEDNESDAY NIGHT – NOT TO MENTION NUMEROUS RADIO INTERVIEWS !!!

Today – well let me tell you !!! shall I ??  Yes we did it again – these humpback whales just love us !!! or is it me they love !!!!  only joking.

Today with a full boat of happy passengers about to encounter a  couple of marine mammals that will touch their hearts – we set out on an adventure.  We head North East off the Tweed Bar in search of our fond friends the Humpbacks, Tony climbs on the roof whilst I drive the boat and away we go.  It’s only about 10 minutes on the otherside of the bar and we hear ‘there she blows’  from Tony up on the roof, Michael downstairs yells ‘whales to the starboard’ Carol yells  ‘huge breach towards Burleigh’ and it’s on !!!  We’re off to the whales tail lobbing about one o’clock ahead – what we found were two very very friendly Humpbacks who fell in love with us !!  We just couldn’t believe it – this is too good to be true how lucky are we – everyone was totally amazed at these two whales that splashed us, rolled over and played games with us for 2 hours – they went from one side of the boat to the other, under to the front swam belly up, belly over, belly in – any which way – every way, I was on the back – again !! calling out, they were a gift from the whale gods !!! oh and whilst all this was happening there were several and mean several other pods all about 500 meters off, breaching, tail lobbing, fin slapping and doing what ever whales do !!! HOW GOOD IS THIS !!!  DAM GOOD LET ME TELL YOU !!!

I think Javier  from France will remember his time in Australia with fond memories of Humpback Whales and the Gold Coast

A rare sight indeed as we headed out through the Tweed River on Tuesday the 25th August 2009.

To our amazement we came across a large pod of Killer Whales (Orca’s) around 1.5 kilometers from shore as we headed out on our whale watching cruise at 9am.  We first spotted a small pod in the distance and straight away new that this just wasn’t any day it was going to be special as we had come across a pod of Killer Whales – we thought we had a cow, calf and bull, then we spotted more Killer Whales, they appeared to be everywhere, all around, spread out like a large pod of dolphins, they were darting here and there.

Then we spotted three large humpbacks chasing the Killers and then the Killers chasing the Humpbacks – never ever before have we ever seen anything like this other than on documentaries and Tony and I were blown away by this experience.  We spent 2 hours with the Killer Whales and watched them swim near the boat several times.  We had one female swimming at the rear of the boat in our wake

How lucky are these two people

Killer Whales and Humpbacks together

Then we went out again on Wednesday and had the most amazing experience with three very large humpbacks that just wanted to spend heaps of time with us – in fact we had to leave as we had already been with them for 2 hours and were now running 1 and a 1/2 hours overtime – but we could have stayed out there all day and night, these whales were magnificant.   These three humpbacks came to the boat and spy hopped all at once rolled over, played, splashed, blew bubbles at us – oh my god !! this was by far the best day of my life !!!!!  I climbed onto the back marlin board and reached out to touch them, they tried so hard to get as close as they could, but their bulky bodies just wouldn’t let them get any closer to me, they tried and tried and my arms just weren’t long enough.

carols-whale-on-side

In all my 49 years of life I would have to say that this is the love of my life and I am so so happy out on the ocean with these magnificant mammals – they are so interactive with you, this particular whale just fell in love with us and he played and played around the boat for such a long time – in fact we had to leave them, they didn’t want to leave us!

This whale actually went over to another pod not very far away and brought back another two whales, which then made 5 whales around the boat.

Every single day is magic – hope to have you out on board with us real soon, the babies are on their way – yippee !!

This has been Carol the ‘Whale Women’ until another day.

The Humpback’s Northern Migration is all but over, with several whales now being spotted going South.  These are not in any hurry and are happy just hanging around Coolangatta for a while.  We are still seeing some going North, but the majority is now heading south.

We have had some magical experiences over the past week or so and everyday we encounter new humpbacks with loads of personality to share with us.  We last wrote on the 11th August, so here is the 12th August encounter:  one single whale heading north, only a young one, he settled to the boat and began to breach and get use to us being in the area, he came to the boat several times and delighted us all – especially me !!!.

13th – all the whales were diving today, most of them going north today, no activity at all, but still a pleasant day, we came across three pods.  Had the dolphins to the boat today.

14th – heaps and heaps of whales today around 30 !!!  all whales just happy hanging around in the area all seemed to be going in one big circle around the area and our boat.  They were tail lobbing, pectoral fin slapping, breaching – a fantastic day for the whales today.

15th calm sea, no wind, whales going north and south again today, about 12 whales this morning.

All very relaxed and happy swimming around and rolling over.

16th nice day out heaps and heaps of whales all going south today, all moving slow and very happy and relaxed int he water around the area.  Had two pods come together and swam together for ages, happily enjoying each others company.  We left these and went further north and found another 4 pods off Burleigh – a great day out, heaps of flying fish and a pod of dolphins.  Great day out.

The babies are on their way and the action is about to hot up with their arrival, we have had such a fabulous season so far and we now look forward to the southern migration.

This has been Carol the ‘Whale Women’ until next time.

We’ve done it again – AN AWESOME DAYS WHALE WATCHING off Coolangatta.  The magic of the Humpback Whale – it never ceases to amaze me – even after all these years !!!  Today, was, is possibly the best day we have had whale watching since yesterday !!!   Another day of whales coming to the boat – today we had one single sub adult absolutley MOB the boat, he was actually chasing us across the ocean – a passengers yells out “Look there’s a whale right there, he is following us!” as we looked to where she was pointing, sure enough one big whale right beside the boat, Tony quickly slowed the boat down and we began to watch and enjoy a magical experience with this whale for one and a half hours !!!!!  He swam beside, underneath, behind, rolling over looking at us, spy hopped several times – oh my god !!! how good is this – I got off my post and began to run around screaming with joy, clapping madly and yelling out to my new friend – the whale of course !!!

The excitement was high and people were so amazed, he left us for a short time, only minutes, then returned again and again and again, then he had picked up a mate, as there was a pod of 6 whales only about 200 meters away, he bought his mate back to meet us, the mate stayed back and in came our new found friend again, now by this time, I was beside myself and on the back deck, laying down and smacking the water madly with my hand and calling out to him, he then swam across in front of me, spy hopped me, rolled over in front of me and all the people on board were totally blown away by all of this !!!!  We were now in tune and I was ever so happy and very wet by this stage ! Wow what an experience.

The whales at this time are just hanging around a bit, seas are great and the water is clear – fabulous Whale Watching today as is every day.

This has been a very excited Carol “the whale women” until my next post.

img_8167Today 3rd August 09 – wow another amazing day.
We would have seen at least 20 whales again today.  All still heading north.  Several pods scattered around 3.5 miles off shore all travelling slow. A couple of pods just took long dives, so we left these and moved to a pod that was very active off Kingscliff.
One humpback whale in the pod continued to breach and breach and we were overwhelmed with excitement as this whale happily entertained us for ages and ages.
He rolled over, pectoral fin slapping and it wasn’t until they came close to us that we realised there was a CALF !!! and only days old if that !!!  The Cow brought her knew borne to the boat twice and what a picture and such a joy.  Mum came within feet of the boat, rolled over and looked straight at us, as if to say, your ok, you can see my baby !!!  Oh My God !!!  She brought her calf to the front of the boat and then again around the back of the boat.
This little whale was given a name by the passengers – Harry the Humpback and his little dorsal was bent over and not yet firm, just beautiful.  They continued their journey North, while the escort humpback whale was happily rolling over and slapping the water – all so very exciting.
So plenty of excitement this week, the weather has been fabulous and will continue so for the rest of the week.
This has been Carol the ‘Whale Women’ until the next exciting episode !!!

Would You ???  Today we had simply the best whale watching cruise so far this year, we had  4 whales that came and enjoyed our company for 30 or so minutes, we ran around the boat watching whales on all sides, up the back, up the front we were surrounded by very friendly whales and how good it was – several hours have passed now and I am still so excited.  This is why I love whale watching sooooo much !!!
